QR Code Not Scanning? 10 Common Causes and Fixes
If your QR code does not scan, the cause is almost always one of the issues below. Work through the checklist from top to bottom.
Checklist
- Low contrast. Use dark dots on a light background. Light dots on dark backgrounds are not read by every scanner.
- Too small. Increase the size or shorten the content. See print size rules.
- Logo too large. Keep it under about 25% of the width and use high error correction. See error correction levels.
- No quiet zone. Keep an empty border of about four modules around the code.
- Too much data. Long URLs create dense patterns. Use a shorter page address.
- Blurry image. Export SVG or a larger PNG instead of enlarging a small image.
- Gradients that are too light. Make sure both gradient colors are dark compared with the background.
- Glare or curved surface. Use matte material and keep the code flat.
- Wrong or broken link. Open the link in a browser to confirm it works. Include https://.
- Camera issues. Clean the lens, add light, and hold the phone steady about 10 to 20 cm away.
Test like a customer
Scan the final printed version with at least two phones, one iPhone and one Android if possible, from the real distance. Fixing a problem before printing costs nothing.
