SVG vs PNG for QR Codes: Which Format Should You Download?
When you download a QR code you usually choose between PNG and SVG. Both work, but each is better for different jobs.
PNG: raster image
PNG is made of pixels. It opens everywhere, can be pasted into slides, chats and social posts, and supports transparent backgrounds. Its weakness is that enlarging a small PNG makes it blurry. For screens, a 1024 px export is plenty. For larger prints, export 2048 px.
SVG: vector image
SVG describes shapes mathematically, so it stays perfectly sharp at any size, from a business card to a building banner. It is also tiny in file size and editable in design tools such as Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape. Some apps and social platforms do not accept SVG uploads.
Quick guide
- Printing (flyers, menus, packaging, signs): SVG.
- Websites: SVG or PNG; SVG is lighter and sharper on high-density screens.
- Social media, chat apps, Word and PowerPoint: PNG.
- Handing files to a printer or designer: send SVG and a PNG backup.
Transparent backgrounds
Loqo can export with a transparent background, which is handy over colored artwork. Keep strong contrast, since a dark code on a busy background can fail. See scanning fixes.
